Descote® and MicroMask® Technologies
PDH utilizes a proprietary process to effectively micro-encapsulate particles for improving taste, odor, stability or release profile. This process offers a solvent-free, flexible solution that offers a variety of inactive material options depending on the desired result of the coated particle.
The company deploys two different, but related processes, depending on the market the micro-encapsulated ingredient is targeted. The Descote process is used for micro-encapsulating nutritional ingredients, while the MicroMask technology is applied to API’s used in OTC and Pharmaceutical products. These technologies, in effect, “seal” the active ingredients in a customized coating matrix. The particles consist of the encapsulated materials or core, which may in be a solid or liquid form, and is suspended in a pliable matrix. The encapsulated particles are dispersed uniformly within the encapsulating matrix. This process provides an advantage over other types of coating applications that can become compromised under pressure, and therefore making the encapsulation useless.
Under normal conditions, the Descote or MicroMask pliable barrier is strong enough to permit processing without rupturing. The barrier remains inert and it does not react with the core of the particle. The matrix deforms on compression, preventing being ruptured.
These processes use no solvents or plastics. Purity of actives is increased since there are no trace quantities of solvent to remove. It is a highly flexible process that allows standard micro-capsule or the preferred deformable matrix technology to be applied. PDH’s Micro-Encapsulation processes can solve many potency and/or stability problems normally experienced in traditional formulations.
